Synopsis

Neilson's play offers a strange yet beautiful exploration of sorrow and of the idea of death by specific means of the performing arts.

In 1881, a famous and enigmatic agent at the time, Edward Gant, presented his show for the last time. The manager of actors, opioid addict, created with his company, a grotesque spectacle, a kind of black comedy, full of mystery and magic realism. A century later, playwright Anthony Neilson reconstituted this fascinating and fantastic historical event into a play that combines melodrama and extravagance with the painful loneliness that characterized that weird Victorian show. The show of Edward Gant's strange and enigmatic travel emphasizes the deformations of the heart and of the mind. This sad showman makes his final exit from the journey through the meanders of the souls and hopes of characters as strange as himself.

Spectators will be able to decipher, in the stories told on the scene, suffering that - ironically! - shine wildly in a rather circus specific atmosphere, and do not lead to anything but a profound exploration of the imagination, the human soul and the role of theater itself. Through a refined game, in which sensitivity is mixed with jokes, at the end of the performance one will be reaching the dramatic conviction of Gant that "the truth of life is most difficult to discern from all the facts".
