The Figaro series of the French playwright also include "The Barber of Seville" and "The Guilty Mother" all of which were censored at the time they were written, at the end of the eighteenth century, by King Louis XVI, who didn’t like the satire targeting the French aristocracy. However, when they received approval to be played, they were a great success even among the aristocrats. Mozart's opera with the same title was sung for the first time in 1786, two years after the play had its premiere.
A masterpiece of the French and international theater, the play is considered as one of the signs of the French Revolution, because it denounces the archaic privileges of the nobility.
Beaumarchais brings on stage the main characters from "The Barber of Seville" (1775), namely Figaro the barber, Count Almaviva and Rosine, now called Contesa. Bartholo, another essential character from "The Barber ...", plays a secondary role here.
