Năpasta is the only drama written by Caragiale and the last play of the great Romanian playwright. In the era when it was written and performed, it sparked many polemics and controversies, with prominent critics of the time offering either very favorable opinions (N. Iorga, C. Dobrogeanu-Gherea) or extremely critical ones (Paul Zarifopol, Pompiliu Constantinescu) regarding this play.
