Eugène Labiche (1815 – 1888) was considered by his admirers to be the equal of Molière, with his comedies being more complex and less coarse than many other works in the same genre. “Of all the characters that crossed my path and that life offered me, I have selected the bourgeois. By definition mediocre, both in his vices and virtues, he stands halfway between the hero and the villain, between the saint and the libertine,” said the playwright, referring to his work.
